How Data Breaches Happen

Companies store user data in databases. When hackers successfully attack a company's servers, they copy these databases and either sell them on dark web marketplaces or release them publicly. These stolen databases contain email addresses and often passwords, names, phone numbers, addresses and other personal information.

The breached data gets compiled into massive combined databases. Security researchers and companies like Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) collect and index these breach databases to create searchable records. This allows individuals to check whether their personal information appeared in any known breach.

Why You Should Check Regularly

Credential stuffing attacks are automated — bots test stolen username and password combinations across hundreds of websites simultaneously. If your email and password from a breached site match credentials on your bank account, email or social media, those accounts are at risk. Many account takeovers happen months or years after the original breach when credentials are finally tested.

Large breaches you may not know about: LinkedIn 2016 (164 million accounts), Adobe 2013 (153 million), Canva 2019 (137 million), Facebook 2019 (533 million), Zomato 2017 (17 million Indian users). If you had accounts on these platforms, your data may have been exposed.

What to Do If Your Email Is Breached

Change the password for any service where you used that email and password combination immediately. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) on your email account, banking and any critical service — this stops unauthorized access even if your password is known. Use a unique password for every important account (password manager makes this manageable). Monitor your email for unusual activity and set up login alerts where available.

Is Checking Safe?

Checking your email against breach databases does not expose your data further. Reputable breach checkers use a technique called k-anonymity — your email is hashed and only a partial hash is sent for checking, so the exact email never leaves your device. Your data is not collected or stored when you use our checker.
